Maritime Engineer Graduate Scheme

WHY BECKETT RANKINE?

Variety

Our graduates are encouraged to become all-round engineers by working on a wide range of maritime projects both in the UK and overseas; from Thames piers and jetties to major West African ports, future-proofing coastal defences to the restoration of historic ships.

Responsibility

Our collaborative and personal working environment means graduates are given responsibility from day one and quickly gain experience across feasibility assessment, detailed design, project management and construction supervision.

Progression

We provide frequent training opportunities for our graduates through both internal and external courses. Graduate training focuses on developing key site skills, such as riverside safety or confined space work, and design capability, such as Eurocode design or software use. We also run internal design and writing competitions, annual entries to the Merit scheme, and encourage staff members to present at PIANC YP seminars.

Inclusivity

We provide ourselves on being a highly personal and inclusive company which fosters a collaborative working environment across all levels. We provide knowledge sharing sessions, monthly socials and a graduate buddy system to ensure all new starters can integrate quickly within the company.

A Day in the Life of a Graduate Engineer – Matt

After grabbing a coffee, I check my messages or emails and begin planning my day ahead. This may involve an internal meeting across the company or a progress review with a smaller project-specific group.

I enjoy the technical challenge of design work, which can vary significantly depending on the project. My design work typically includes completing calculations, developing analytical models, collaborating with technicians to produce design drawings and ensuring compliance with relevant standards.

As a graduate engineer, I am always learning on the job and am encouraged to try new ideas, processes and methods before seeking help from others. I recently completed a detailed design of a new pier on the Thames, for which I was supported throughout by the specialist structural, geotechnical and naval architectural expertise of those around me at BR.

Lunch is very sociable at BR, and I usually take a wander to the local market before sitting down to eat with colleagues. I also enjoy a lunchtime trip to the tennis or badminton courts nearby in Victoria.

I am typically working across 2-4 projects simultaneously, making sure that I balance my workload to meet the demands of each project. In the afternoon, I may focus on report writing – summarising the key findings of a recently conducted site investigation or survey.

Other work I typically do includes producing technical studies for consent applications, drafting key project documentation such as tender documents and developing strategic risk assessments for design or site work.

When project work is not too busy, I fit in time for professional development to ensure I continue progressing towards Chartership with the ICE. This requires keeping a log of work I’m completing or participating in a seminar.

BR also support regular training for everyone - I recently completed a Riverside Personal Safety training course which involved practising the use of life jackets and life saving equipment in a swimming pool!

The company holds regular socials or knowledge sharing session after work. These are friendly and relaxed events, which provide a great opportunity to get to know my colleagues and learn from other projects across the company.
