A delegation from the St Petersburg Transportation
and Transit Department visited London to view the capital's transport
infrastructure. This was their second visit following HRH The Duke of
York's visit to St Petersburg in early June in his role as UK’s
Special Representative for International Trade and Investment. At
that time the Duke met the Governor of St Petersburg, Mrs
Valentina Matvienko, to discuss the city’s plans for developing a more
efficient public transport system; the Duke invited a delegation to meet some of the people responsible for the redevelopment of London's transport infrastructure.
Beckett Rankine organised the water transport part of the programme for UKTI.
This included presentations from BR on London's Piers and Thames
Clippers on their fast ferry passenger vessels. Port of London and
London River Services also explained their role in the river's regulatory
framework.
The delegation boarded a boat to view six of the piers BR have designed on Thames Clippers'
route between Millbank Millennium Pier and the QEII Pier at
the O2. At the O2 AEG provided a tour of what is now the
World's most popular entertainment venue.

Construction of Imperial Wharf Marina on the river Thames has commenced
with the installation of piles for the bankseat. The main contractor is
Walcon with the piles being installed by their subcontractor Red 7
Marine who are using their spud leg crane barge Haven Seavoyager.
Complicating the commencement on site was the presence of Fugro's site
investigation jack up rig; Fugro were drilling a borehole for Thames Water's Thames Tunnel sewer overflow diversion tunnel project. Imperial
Wharf marina will, once complete, provide more than 630m of berthing
space for a range of leisure vessels up to the size of Dutch canal barges.

Crew Transfer Pontoon, Barrow-in-Furness, UK |
|

|
Thursday, 29 April 2010 |
The latest Dockmaster pontoon has been installed for Dong Energy to
serve their Barrow Offshore Windfarm ( BOWind) project. We have designed this unusual
berthing facility to meet a most difficult brief; due to the
need for the Walney channel to be periodically dredged for the passage
of submarines the pontoon had to be restrained without any piles,
anchors or any other attachment to the river bed. Further complicating
the task the site is subject to an 11m tidal range and, on extreme low
tides the pontoon can ground on the sloping sea bed. To overcome these
constraints the pontoon is moored by its tubular brow that connects it
to the shore together with four mooring chains also connected
to the shore. The brow's hinged support provides three degrees of
freedom and permits the pontoon to be swung to one side when dredging
takes place.
Windcat vessels normally berth bow on to the pontoon for crew transfer
as they do to the wind turbines but the pontoon can also accommodate
alongside berthing on the sides with one of the side berths being
fitted with a fueling facility.
This is the first of four berthing facilities being constructed at Barrow using Dockmaster pontoons; the others are for ABP, Siemens and the Ormonde wind farm. All the berths are due to be completed by September 2010.

NFC already operate two high speed Austal 65m catamarans Shinas and Hormuz and are now supplementing their fleet with three Rodriguez 52m wavepiercing catamarans for the extended service. The ports where Beckett Rankine are advising on new berthing facilities for the ferries are Sultan Qaboos Port at Muscat, Sur New Port and Masirah Island. In the photo below Tim Beckett can be seen inspecting Sultan Qaboos Port with Captain Alex Wilson and Captain Malcolm Parrott, both from TMG.

Chatham Docks Caisson Gates Refurbishment |
|
UK Projects
|
|
Thursday, 11 March 2010 |
Peel Ports have commissioned Beckett Rankine to design
refurbishment works for the four sliding caisson gates to the two tidal
locks which provide access to Chatham's Commercial Docks. The locks and
their operating machinery were constructed for the Royal Navy in the
1870s although the current caisson gates are replacements dating from
the 1960s. The project is to remove and dry dock the caissons for
repairs and also to refurbish the cills on which the gates slide. As
there is no nearby operational dry dock that can accommodate the gates
we are investigating the reinstatement of an old abandoned dry dock facility for
the purpose. Throughout the refurbishment the commercial docks are to
remain operational.
