A swampy, low lying area just downstream of Port Harcourt in Nigeria was chosen as the site for a new cement unloading terminal with a projected throughput of 600,000 tonnes a year. Good marine and land access near the site made it an ideal place for the new industrial development proposed by Ibeto Industries.

Beckett Rankine entered into a joint venture with Allott (Nigeria) to undertake the planning, design and supervision of the marine and land works. These comprised initial investigations, dredging/reclamation, site layout, planning and design of marine works and heavy foundations.

The very soft nature of the upper soil layers under the recent sand fill throughout the 200 metre by 200 metre site required skilfull geotechnical assessment for the detailed foundation design. The rate of ground settlement was estimated and all significant structures were constructed on piled foundations.
