Refurbishment and Regeneration

There is a constant need to upgrade ports and harbours with changes to meet the needs of seaborne trade, whether customers need conversion from one cargo type to another or shippers want to introduce bigger and faster vessels.

Different vessel types can often be accommodated by re-fendering the berths or dredging the channels, but there is also a trend for larger ports to be developed at deeper water locations, with trade dwindling at the older ports.

Many traditional ports are in areas of dense population with high land values. The popularity of waterside sites for commercial and residential development makes conversion away from port use an attractive proposition.

In changing from cargo handling to commercial or leisure use, it is worth having specific attractions for visitors to focus on, for example historic ships or refurbished cranes.

Bhavnagar Port

The lifting gate at Bhavnagar port had exceeded its design life and was suffering from leakage that prevented the continued maintenance of the correct water level in the impounded port basin. This was caused by corrosion to the underground sheet pile cut-off wall because of severe scouring of the concrete panels on the seabed.

Beckett Rankine inspected site surveys and developed various designs to solve the problem. The works were carried out by the contractor on a turnkey contract and we reviewed drawings, surveys and other documents as required. The leak was repaired by patching the hole and grouting.

Millennium Dome - Anthony Gormley Statue

A large exhibition was set up at Greenwich for twelve months to celebrate the new millennium. A number of substantial sculptures were included with several focusing on the water at this prominent location on the River Thames. Anthony Gormley's statue "Cosmic Cloud" was selected for a position at the site's river entrance.

Beckett Rankine designed the supporting substructure for the sculpture using a dolphin from the passenger landing pier. Four cast iron piles originating from the 100 year old coaling jetty were augmented by a new pile with bracing to resist the statue's additional wind loading.

Wandsworth Riverside Quarter

Riverside Quarter is part of the regeneration of the southern bank of the River Thames converting a brownfield site into new residential properties with modern riverside facilities with boathouses and a riverbus service. The old river walls restrain the tidal river flow and also form part of the flood defences along the River Thames.

Beckett Rankine are involved in condition surveys of the river walls and have designed works to strengthen and enhance these traditional masonry structures. Environmental issues have been considered and mitigation measures include new barges for birds to nest and roost.

Greenwich Promenade Pavilion

A new pavilion is planned at Greenwich on the riverside pier near to the historic sailing vessel "Cutty Sark" giving a landmark entrance building to Historic Greenwich. From its strategic position on the apex of the riverbend the glass and steel structure has been designed to give extensive panoramic views of London's docklands.

Beckett Rankine had the task of repairing and strengthening the foundations to the structure which comprises a 100 year old masonry quay structure. The majority of this substructure is below the high tide level and requires careful attention to detail to maintain its structural integrity.

Grays Town Wharf

This project is part of the urban renewal of Grays Town on the Northern bank of the River Thames in Essex. It involves the refurbishment and opening up of the Old Town Wharf to provide public access to the riverside. The old timber, steel and concrete berth structures have been replaced by an area for public amenity.

Beckett Rankine designed the new sheet piled river frontage to replace the old failing quay wall. The structure was constructed in front of the old wall which was left in place and used to provide part of the lateral restraint. The flood defence level had to be maintained throughout.

Maryport

Commercial shipping trade at the port of Maryport has ceased with the exception of a small but active fishing fleet. Consideration is therefore being given to improve the surrounding area with the harbour providing a focal point to maintain the marine heritage. Alternative urban regeneration schemes have been assessed.

Beckett Rankine studied all the marine aspects of the project. This included a condition survey of the dock gates and recommendations for the design of a replacement system. An assessment to provide a forecast of future dredging and infrastructure maintenance costs was also provided.

Dartford Container Terminal

A dedicated Roll-on, Roll-off ferry terminal with two berths close to London's motorway network was not attracting sufficient cargo. Urgent modifications were needed to enable lift on/off container handling for a lucrative short-term contract. This was achieved rapidly by providing a floating quay with two mobile container cranes.

Beckett Rankine developed the innovative concept to introduce floating container handling cranes at this river berth. We also advised on procurement of the pontoon, which was purchased, and leasing of the cranes, as well as detailed design of steelwork and other modifications.

This site is now referred to as "Thames Europort".

Braye Harbour, Commercial Quay

The Commercial Quay at Alderney required an upgrade due to its decaying fabric and the need to facilitate access for larger vessels. The relative merits of reconstructing and enlarging the commercial Quay were considered and various site investigations undertaken to determine the ultimate scheme.

Beckett Rankine prepared a masterplan for development of the harbour and plans for refurbishing the quay, including cargo and passenger handling issues. Hydrographic and geotechnical investigations were undertaken and hydraulic modelling to assess wave climate in the harbour.

Port of Pembroke

Due to a decline in business and an overall lack of funding, the Port of Pembroke near Milford Haven was to be sold. The owner required expert assistance in preparation of market material. The port has two deep water general cargo quays plus a smaller dedicated berth for bunkering vessels up to 20,000 DWT.

Beckett Rankine found the three solid quays to be in servicable condition. It was ascertained that the port was suitable for the handling of timber, refrigerated goods, bulks and semi-bulks. Subject to an agreement with the neighbouring site, Ro-Ro services could be introduced.

Northfleet Cable Loadout Jetty, River Thames

Specialist underwater cables for the telecommunications industry are manufactured at NEI's Northfleet factory. These cables have to be loaded directly onto cable laying vessels and a new jetty was needed. Continuous horizontal supports were required as the long continuous cables are pulled onto drums in the ship.

Beckett Rankine designed a scheme to refurbish an old jetty next to the factory and link it with an enclosed overhead gantry for cable loading. The existing dolphins were modified to suit the characteristics of the vessel and new piles were introduced to support the cable gantry.
