Piers

Piers are used to transfer passengers to and from boats and safety is of paramount importance. Floating pontoons and long brows are often used to accommodate water level variation.

Attractive, desirable and convenient piers generally cost more but innovative design can help. For example use of radial arms can avoid the need for piles.

Beckett Rankine have designed more piers on the River Thames than anyone else.

Historic piers add to the maritime heritage but these may have been constructed from a variety of materials and need considerable care when upgrading to modern standards.

Royal Arsenal Pier

A new passenger landing pier was called for in the lower reaches of the River Thames to give river access close to the major urban regeneration at the historic Woolwich Arsenal. Here the old buildings have been converted and transformed into desirable residential accommodation with a significant focus on the River.

Beckett Rankine have designed the pier and its canting brow access bridge together with locating piles. The location is more exposed than the sheltered upper reaches of the river making it necessary for stronger structural designs including collision loading on the bridge.

Millbank Millennium Pier

Millbank Millennium Pier breaks new ground in the design of passenger piers. The pier links Tate Britain, Tate Modern and Saatchi gallery by riverboat. Consequently the aesthetic appearance of the pier was a critical requirement in the design which considers the pier as a functional floating sculpture formed of faceted steel plates.

Beckett Rankine had overall responsibility for design of the new pier and supervision of its construction. At night the pier is transformed by Angela Bulloch's 'Flash & Tidal' artwork which is built into the pier's structure. The pier has been nominated for several design awards.

St George Wharf Pier, London

A large residential complex is being developed at St George Wharf near Vauxhall Bridge in London. A passenger pier for river craft was included in the local authority planning agreement. This is part of the Transport for London initiative which includes using the River Thames as an important link in the overall public transport system.

Beckett Rankine have planned and designed the new pier and will supervise its construction. This work has included site investigations, hydraulic model study, environmental analysis as well as submitting applications for approvals from all relevant authorities.

Ukrainian Oil Import Terminal

Importation of crude oil through the Black Sea port of Yuzhny was required to relieve the chronic shortage of feedslock to the Ukrainian refineries caused by the break up of the former Soviet Union. An offshore unloading buoy and 4km sub-sea pipeline were proposed to transfer the imported oil to the shorebased oil tank farm.

Beckett Rankine reviewed the previous designs, specifications and contracts for the marine aspects of this project. We also restructured elements to meet the requirements of EBRD. Also consideration of environmental issues to ensure compliance with EBRD procedures.

Truro Pier

A new floating landing stage has been installed adjacent to the Truro flood gate to provide a berth for passing passenger ferries on the route between Truro and Falmouth. It is secured to the flood barrage structure to avoid unsightly piles protruding into the river. Due to budget constraints this was a low cost, effective solution.

Beckett Rankine designed the pontoon working in close co-operation with the contractor. The pontoon has been designed to accommodate the tidal range and to sit on the soft mud foreshore at low water. It also has to resist the waves from passing vessels.

Radicatel Freight Ferry Terminal

A new Roll-on Roll-off freight ferry service between Southampton and the French terminal at Radicatel has started operation. Vessels carry accompanied and unaccompanied road trailers and containers on this new route which fills a gap in the market. This overnight crossing will save the users considerable driving time.

Beckett Rankine have managed the project, masterplanning the terminals, undertaking the outline design of the new facilities and preparing the contract documents for the new linkspan at Radicatel. This fast track project was completed on time and to budget.
