A comprehensive knowledge of the site is required to enable development of appropriate designs for any marine project. In many cases this will require the collection of data on existing structures, soils or marine conditions. |

Riverside Quarter is part of the regeneration of the southern bank of the River Thames converting a brownfield site into new residential properties with modern riverside facilities with boathouses and a riverbus service. The old river walls restrain the tidal river flow and also form part of the flood defences along the River Thames.
Beckett Rankine are involved in condition surveys of the river walls and have designed works to strengthen and enhance these traditional masonry structures. Environmental issues have been considered and mitigation measures include new barges for birds to nest and roost.

Millbank Millennium Pier breaks new ground in the design of passenger piers. The pier links Tate Britain, Tate Modern and Saatchi gallery by riverboat. Consequently the aesthetic appearance of the pier was a critical requirement in the design which considers the pier as a functional floating sculpture formed of faceted steel plates.
Beckett Rankine had overall responsibility for design of the new pier and supervision of its construction. At night the pier is transformed by Angela Bulloch's 'Flash & Tidal' artwork which is built into the pier's structure. The pier has been nominated for several design awards.

A large residential complex is being developed at St George Wharf near Vauxhall Bridge in London. A passenger pier for river craft was included in the local authority planning agreement. This is part of the Transport for London initiative which includes using the River Thames as an important link in the overall public transport system.
Beckett Rankine have planned and designed the new pier and will supervise its construction. This work has included site investigations, hydraulic model study, environmental analysis as well as submitting applications for approvals from all relevant authorities.

The Duchy of Cornwall planned to improve the facilities available for small craft at St. Mary's Harbour. The objective was to increase the number of berths available to local users while at the same time attracting more visiting yachts. This was achieved by the installation of over 200 new moorings for yachts and small commercial vessels.
Beckett Rankine devised a scheme to reorganise the layout of swinging moorings to give more space between boats and yet add to the number of moorings. These new moorings have now provided safe berthing for visitors in the outer harbour and for locals in the inner harbour.

The Yamal peninsula houses an enormous quantity of natural gas, considered to be the fuel of the future. But the hostile environment makes it difficult to extract and transport the gas. With water around the peninsula iced over for most of the year, a design must be created which takes into account the present lack of infrastructure.
Beckett Rankine specified in the site investigation for the planned marine terminal. This included developing alternative schemes for the efficient exportation of the natural gas, as well as liasing with shipping companies concerning the size and speed of loading of the vessels.

A new 480MW power plant has been built at Marmara Ereglisi. However during commissioning it was found that the 2.4m diameter GRP cooling water intake and outlet pipelines were not installed to specification. This has given rise to a need for inspection to monitor the underwater elements on a regular bi-annual basis.
Beckett Rankine has been providing essential technical advice including subsea engineering and sending diving engineers on site to monitor both the GRP intake and outlet lines. This work has been carried out by BR's own specialist underwater engineering staff.

The NLE Timber terminal at the Port of Novorossiysk on the Black Sea is expanding to accommodate sustained export of sawn timber combined with an increased demand for container handling. New customers have been attracted to this terminal now that it is in the private sector and being run on Western principles.
Beckett Rankine undertook a detailed study of the port and prepared a masterplan for its phased development. The masterplan study addressed a combination of operational, economic and engineering issues preparing a framework for the terminal expansion.
