Project Implementation

On-time project completion with tight budget control is essential, particularly when constructing facilities needed to start new shipping contracts. Specialist and experienced advice will reduce the risk of unexpected difficulties.

For projects close to shipping and cargo handling areas disruption to existing activities has to be avoided, sometimes requiring special scheduling of the contract.

Substantial sections of marine civil engineering works cannot be seen as they are underwater, underground or in the inter-tidal zone. Proper inspection and control of the contractor’s activities is essential.

Beckett Rankine are experienced at setting up, tendering and administering contracts for marine civil engineering and equipment procurement in accordance with FIDIC, ICE and other forms.

Wandsworth Riverside Quarter

Riverside Quarter is part of the regeneration of the southern bank of the River Thames converting a brownfield site into new residential properties with modern riverside facilities with boathouses and a riverbus service. The old river walls restrain the tidal river flow and also form part of the flood defences along the River Thames.

Beckett Rankine are involved in condition surveys of the river walls and have designed works to strengthen and enhance these traditional masonry structures. Environmental issues have been considered and mitigation measures include new barges for birds to nest and roost.

Millbank Millennium Pier

Millbank Millennium Pier breaks new ground in the design of passenger piers. The pier links Tate Britain, Tate Modern and Saatchi gallery by riverboat. Consequently the aesthetic appearance of the pier was a critical requirement in the design which considers the pier as a functional floating sculpture formed of faceted steel plates.

Beckett Rankine had overall responsibility for design of the new pier and supervision of its construction. At night the pier is transformed by Angela Bulloch's 'Flash & Tidal' artwork which is built into the pier's structure. The pier has been nominated for several design awards.

Rainham Wharf

The Thames-side barge wharf at Rainham had been constructed following the Second World War using some of the floating roadway units that had returned from the Mulberry Harbour. Facilities at the wharf needed to be modernised to accommodate large self-discharge dredgers. The imported gravel is much needed for construction.

Beckett Rankine inspected the marine facilities and designed strengthening to the existing dolphins. New dolphins were also designed to support a replacement pontoon and a new conveyor system. A check was carried out on the flood wall in the area of the new stockyard.

Poole Dinghy Harbour

A small private dinghy harbour to provide shelter for two pleasure boats with direct access to Poole Harbour and the sea beyond. Although the protected area is only 17m x 10m it has created a pleasant environment and a useful addition to the back garden of one of the substantial residential properties along this coastline.

Beckett Rankine planned, designed and supervised the project. The marina walls were constructed using cantilevered sheet piles driven into the firm sandy bed. The seabed within the marina was dredged to a level that enables access by small craft at all but the very low tides.

Heysham Ferry Port

This busy port now has three ro-ro berths to accomodate ferries working the thriving Irish Sea routes. Much of the old infrastructure has been modified to cater for the requirements of new vessels. As a commercial port, it has been essential to adopt economical and efficient engineering solutions for all refurbishment projects.

Beckett Rankine have worked on projects to upgrade several berths. Most recently we designed and supervised installation of the high performance fendering system at the timber staging on No.1 berth. Conventional ferries and high speed SeaCats can now be accomodated.

Brady's Groyne

'Colonel' Brady's Groyne is a concrete structure that suffered from years of neglect and was largely destroyed by the effects of repeated storm wave action. This permitted the shingle beach to progress eastward by littoral drift with the consequential threat to reduce water depth in the entrance channel to Folkestone Harbour.

Beckett Rankine carried out a full design of the new structure, prepared tender documentation and supervised the construction work on site. The repairs to the groyne were constructed largely in mass concrete, which was fixed to the existing structure and poured in the inter-tidal zone.

Plymouth Ferry Service

With the improvement of much of Plymouth's waterside property over the last ten years, the City Council planned to provide a public transport link between strategic locations around this extensive harbour. These sites included Mounbatten and historic Royal William Yard. Plymouth City submitted a bid for a millennium grant.

Beckett Rankine prepared outline designs for the passenger ferry terminals at four new locations around the harbour. We also prepared a specification for the passenger ferry vessels for use on these routes. Costings were calculated for both the shore and waterbourne infrastructure.

Ramsgate Lifeboat Station

A new state-of-the-art lifeboat station has been constructed within the protected waters of the historic Ramsgate Royal Harbour. In keeping with RNLI policy an architecturally attractive building was needed. The building had to provide accommodation for crews and enable quick and easy access to both inshore and offshore lifeboats.

Beckett Rankine designed and supervised construction of the sub-structure, which was a reinforced concrete platform supported on steel tubular piles. Our work also included close liaison with the architects to provide all the engineering input to the building superstructure.

St Mary's Harbour Moorings

The Duchy of Cornwall planned to improve the facilities available for small craft at St. Mary's Harbour. The objective was to increase the number of berths available to local users while at the same time attracting more visiting yachts. This was achieved by the installation of over 200 new moorings for yachts and small commercial vessels.

Beckett Rankine devised a scheme to reorganise the layout of swinging moorings to give more space between boats and yet add to the number of moorings. These new moorings have now provided safe berthing for visitors in the outer harbour and for locals in the inner harbour.

Newhaven Dredging

Dredging at Newhaven twice a year in order to maintain adequate depth of water in the entrance channel for the port and at the berths. A trailing suction dredger is used to dredge about 250,000T per annum. The spoil, which is a combination of sand and silt, is deposited at an approved offshore dumping ground.

Beckett Rankine prepared and tendered the contract for the biannual maintenance dredging. Our work now includes administration of the contract and supervision of the dredging work and surveys. Formal returns are made to the authorities for quantities of material dumped at sea.
