Detailed Design

Close interaction with port operators, shipping companies and other users is essential for efficient design of marine infrastructure. A clear perception is needed of the statutory consents that will be required.

A comprehensive site-specific assessment has to be made of the prevailing marine and geotechnical conditions as well as assessing the residual strength of any existing structures.

Commercial and technical risk can be minimised through experience and use of modern systems. Design codes for marine structures should be adhered to.

Beckett Rankine's design team are working on these issues every day. The team has vast experience of marine work and focus on optimising solutions for specific marine problems.

Dockmaster Pontoon

The Dockmaster Pontoon is a state-of-the-art heavy duty pontoon system suitable for berthing large yachts, ferries and support vessels. Dockmaster has now become the pontoon of choice for the UK windfarm industry and has been installed in several harbours for personnel craft. Dockmaster can be supported on piled or anchored moorings.

Beckett Rankine has developed designs for the Dockmaster, working closely with the client and production teamto include refinements as required. Strength is provided by stressing the precast concrete side panels against the expanded polystyrene buoyancy block and all tied together with the concrete deck.

Royal Arsenal Pier

A new passenger landing pier was called for in the lower reaches of the River Thames to give river access close to the major urban regeneration at the historic Woolwich Arsenal. Here the old buildings have been converted and transformed into desirable residential accommodation with a significant focus on the River.

Beckett Rankine have designed the pier and its canting brow access bridge together with locating piles. The location is more exposed than the sheltered upper reaches of the river making it necessary for stronger structural designs including collision loading on the bridge.

Onne Cement Terminal, Nigeria

A new bulk cement terminal at Onne, near Port Harcourt. The project involved dredging to deepen the access channel and use of the dredged spoil for land reclamation. There was also construction of an access road over the swamp, construction of a jetty and berthing dolphins with shore side administration and support facilities.

Beckett Rankine have planned and designed marine and shoreside facilities for the cement terminal, including navigation chanels and road access. Working closely with a team of local engineers we have also supervised the dredging and construction works on site.

Millennium Dome - Anthony Gormley Statue

A large exhibition was set up at Greenwich for twelve months to celebrate the new millennium. A number of substantial sculptures were included with several focusing on the water at this prominent location on the River Thames. Anthony Gormley's statue "Cosmic Cloud" was selected for a position at the site's river entrance.

Beckett Rankine designed the supporting substructure for the sculpture using a dolphin from the passenger landing pier. Four cast iron piles originating from the 100 year old coaling jetty were augmented by a new pile with bracing to resist the statue's additional wind loading.

Wandsworth Riverside Quarter

Riverside Quarter is part of the regeneration of the southern bank of the River Thames converting a brownfield site into new residential properties with modern riverside facilities with boathouses and a riverbus service. The old river walls restrain the tidal river flow and also form part of the flood defences along the River Thames.

Beckett Rankine are involved in condition surveys of the river walls and have designed works to strengthen and enhance these traditional masonry structures. Environmental issues have been considered and mitigation measures include new barges for birds to nest and roost.

Millbank Millennium Pier

Millbank Millennium Pier breaks new ground in the design of passenger piers. The pier links Tate Britain, Tate Modern and Saatchi gallery by riverboat. Consequently the aesthetic appearance of the pier was a critical requirement in the design which considers the pier as a functional floating sculpture formed of faceted steel plates.

Beckett Rankine had overall responsibility for design of the new pier and supervision of its construction. At night the pier is transformed by Angela Bulloch's 'Flash & Tidal' artwork which is built into the pier's structure. The pier has been nominated for several design awards.

Rainham Wharf

The Thames-side barge wharf at Rainham had been constructed following the Second World War using some of the floating roadway units that had returned from the Mulberry Harbour. Facilities at the wharf needed to be modernised to accommodate large self-discharge dredgers. The imported gravel is much needed for construction.

Beckett Rankine inspected the marine facilities and designed strengthening to the existing dolphins. New dolphins were also designed to support a replacement pontoon and a new conveyor system. A check was carried out on the flood wall in the area of the new stockyard.

St George Wharf Pier, London

A large residential complex is being developed at St George Wharf near Vauxhall Bridge in London. A passenger pier for river craft was included in the local authority planning agreement. This is part of the Transport for London initiative which includes using the River Thames as an important link in the overall public transport system.

Beckett Rankine have planned and designed the new pier and will supervise its construction. This work has included site investigations, hydraulic model study, environmental analysis as well as submitting applications for approvals from all relevant authorities.

Poole Dinghy Harbour

A small private dinghy harbour to provide shelter for two pleasure boats with direct access to Poole Harbour and the sea beyond. Although the protected area is only 17m x 10m it has created a pleasant environment and a useful addition to the back garden of one of the substantial residential properties along this coastline.

Beckett Rankine planned, designed and supervised the project. The marina walls were constructed using cantilevered sheet piles driven into the firm sandy bed. The seabed within the marina was dredged to a level that enables access by small craft at all but the very low tides.

Greenwich Promenade Pavilion

A new pavilion is planned at Greenwich on the riverside pier near to the historic sailing vessel "Cutty Sark" giving a landmark entrance building to Historic Greenwich. From its strategic position on the apex of the riverbend the glass and steel structure has been designed to give extensive panoramic views of London's docklands.

Beckett Rankine had the task of repairing and strengthening the foundations to the structure which comprises a 100 year old masonry quay structure. The majority of this substructure is below the high tide level and requires careful attention to detail to maintain its structural integrity.
