Design, Audit & Review

An independent third party check, or peer review, will maximise confidence in the design of critical project elements and that the stated objectives will be achieved.

Clients, operators, funding agencies, banks and insurance companies often insist on a design audit or review before giving their full backing to a project.

Design and construct contracts usually benefit from review of their design as they are often carried out for a tight budget in a limited timeframe. Additional focus at the design stage can save much more during construction.

Beckett Rankine have developed an efficient system of reviewing designs and logging comments. The design originator responds and queries are closed out as appropriate.

Ukrainian Oil Import Terminal

Importation of crude oil through the Black Sea port of Yuzhny was required to relieve the chronic shortage of feedslock to the Ukrainian refineries caused by the break up of the former Soviet Union. An offshore unloading buoy and 4km sub-sea pipeline were proposed to transfer the imported oil to the shorebased oil tank farm.

Beckett Rankine reviewed the previous designs, specifications and contracts for the marine aspects of this project. We also restructured elements to meet the requirements of EBRD. Also consideration of environmental issues to ensure compliance with EBRD procedures.

Floating Breakwater, Falmouth

A new steel floating breakwater structure has been installed to give all year shelter from waves at Falmouth Yacht Harbour. While protected from offshore storm waves, the marina is exposed to wind driven waves generated across the 3 km fetch within Falmouth Bay. Craft can now remain at their berths throughout the winter season.

Beckett Rankine advised the client on the procurement of the floating breakwater units and carried out a technical audit of the designs. Our work also included design of moorings using large stud linked chain and high performance anchors buried in the sea bed.

Truro Pier

A new floating landing stage has been installed adjacent to the Truro flood gate to provide a berth for passing passenger ferries on the route between Truro and Falmouth. It is secured to the flood barrage structure to avoid unsightly piles protruding into the river. Due to budget constraints this was a low cost, effective solution.

Beckett Rankine designed the pontoon working in close co-operation with the contractor. The pontoon has been designed to accommodate the tidal range and to sit on the soft mud foreshore at low water. It also has to resist the waves from passing vessels.

Gdansk Container Terminal

Following the introduction of Poland into the EU in 2004, it had been predicted that there will be a greater demand for containerised products in this country. However there was a serious lack of deep-sea container ports in Poland. Therefore a solution was required to facilitate the rapid growth of international trade to this developing nation.

Beckett Rankine carried out a design review of the main aspects of the new port, including the piling, dredging and land reclaimation proposals, as well as the quay walls. Recommendations included improvements to certain features of the design, particularly to reduce the start-up cost.

Radicatel Freight Ferry Terminal

A new Roll-on Roll-off freight ferry service between Southampton and the French terminal at Radicatel has started operation. Vessels carry accompanied and unaccompanied road trailers and containers on this new route which fills a gap in the market. This overnight crossing will save the users considerable driving time.

Beckett Rankine have managed the project, masterplanning the terminals, undertaking the outline design of the new facilities and preparing the contract documents for the new linkspan at Radicatel. This fast track project was completed on time and to budget.

Puerto Caucedo Container Terminal

CSXWT are part owner and operator of the new container terminal in the Dominican Republic, Bouygues are the construction manager. Initially there will be 2 No 300m long berths with respectively 14m and 15m alongside water depth and protected by a 900m breakwater. This will later be extended to a 1,000m quay providing three berths.

Beckett Rankine have been assisting Mouchel with their audit of the contractor's design, particularly in relation to the new breakwater and quay structures. This work has included review of proposals for the rock breakwater armoured with concrete units and the hybrid combipile-RC quay.

Marmara Ereglisi

A new 480MW power plant has been built at Marmara Ereglisi. However during commissioning it was found that the 2.4m diameter GRP cooling water intake and outlet pipelines were not installed to specification. This has given rise to a need for inspection to monitor the underwater elements on a regular bi-annual basis.

Beckett Rankine has been providing essential technical advice including subsea engineering and sending diving engineers on site to monitor both the GRP intake and outlet lines. This work has been carried out by BR's own specialist underwater engineering staff.

NLE Terminal Novorossiysk, Russia

The NLE Timber terminal at the Port of Novorossiysk on the Black Sea is expanding to accommodate sustained export of sawn timber combined with an increased demand for container handling. New customers have been attracted to this terminal now that it is in the private sector and being run on Western principles.

Beckett Rankine undertook a detailed study of the port and prepared a masterplan for its phased development. The masterplan study addressed a combination of operational, economic and engineering issues preparing a framework for the terminal expansion.
